Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST, made the announcement on October 7, 2009.  Promoting science and technology to the same cultural level as entertainment and sports in our culture is a problem, Kamen noted. &#8220;We live in a culture that doesn&#8217;t respect or celebrate science and technology. We have to create demand for science and technology, especially among women and minorities.&#8221;</p>
